Scheduling & referrals
Do I need a referral or order from my doctor?
Yes. Diagnostic imaging at Align Radiology requires an order (sometimes called a referral or prescription) from your healthcare provider. It tells us which exam you need and why. Your provider can fax it to us at (240) 241-6888, or you can bring it to your appointment.
How do I schedule an appointment?
The fastest way is to schedule online, anytime. You can also call us at (240) 499-2863 or request a callback. Same-day or next-day appointments are often available.
Can I book my appointment online?
Yes. Our online self-scheduling lets you book your exam yourself, day or night. You start with your name, date of birth and phone number, verify your phone with a text code, and then choose your appointment. Have your doctor’s order and insurance card handy.
I want a proactive health check without a referral. Can you help?
Align Radiology focuses on imaging ordered by your doctor. For proactive, self-referred health assessments, see our partner CareMVP, whose imaging is performed here in Laurel.
Which insurance plans do you accept?
We accept Medicare, Maryland Medicaid, Aetna, BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, TRICARE Select, Johns Hopkins plans and more. See the full list and call us to confirm your specific plan.
Does my insurance need to approve the exam first?
Many plans require prior authorization for MRI and CT. Your ordering provider’s office usually requests it. We are happy to confirm your coverage before your visit.
Preparing for your exam
What should I bring?
Your doctor’s order, a photo ID, your insurance card, a list of your medicines and allergies, and any previous imaging of the same area taken somewhere else.
Can I eat before my exam?
It depends on the exam. Most MRI, X-ray and many ultrasound exams need no fasting. Some CT scans with contrast and abdominal ultrasounds do. We will give you clear instructions when you book.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing without metal, such as zippers, snaps or underwire. Leave jewelry at home. You may be asked to change into a gown.
Can I fill out forms ahead of time?
Yes. Completing your patient forms before your visit shortens check-in.
During your visit
How long will my appointment take?
X-rays take minutes; CT scans usually take a few minutes on the table; ultrasounds take 20 to 45 minutes; MRI exams take 20 to 60 minutes. Plan a little extra time for check-in.
I am anxious about the MRI. What can help?
Our 3T wide-bore MRI has a roomier opening, and we use soft lighting, headphones and constant contact with your technologist. If you are very anxious, ask your doctor ahead of time about medicine to help you relax, and arrange a ride home.
Is the exam painful?
No. Imaging exams are painless. If your exam needs contrast, you may feel a brief pinch from the IV.
Results & billing
When will I get my results?
A board-certified radiologist reads your exam and sends a report to your doctor, typically within 24 to 48 hours. Your doctor will go over the results with you.
Can I see my report and images?
Yes. Use our secure patient portal to view your results. Your login details are provided at your visit.
Who bills for my exam?
We bill your insurance for the imaging exam. Your plan may apply a copay, coinsurance or deductible. Call us if you have questions about a bill.
Safety
Is MRI safe with implants?
Many implants are MRI-safe or MRI-conditional, but some are not. Tell us about any pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, nerve stimulator, aneurysm clip, insulin pump or metal fragments when you book so we can check.
How much radiation will I get?
MRI and ultrasound use no radiation. X-ray uses a very low dose. CT uses more, so we follow low-dose protocols that use the lowest dose that answers your doctor’s question.
What if I might be pregnant?
Tell your doctor and our technologist before any exam. We may adjust or postpone the exam, or your doctor may choose a test without radiation.
