- Abdominal ultrasoundYou will usually be asked not to eat for several hours beforehand so the gallbladder and other organs are easy to see.
- Pelvic ultrasoundYou may be asked to drink water and arrive with a full bladder, which helps us see the pelvic organs.
- Other examsThyroid, vascular, musculoskeletal and most other ultrasounds need no preparation.
- Wear easy clothingA two-piece outfit makes it simple to uncover just the area being examined.

Does an ultrasound hurt?
No. The sonographer moves a smooth probe over your skin with a little warm gel. You may feel light pressure, but the exam is painless.

Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, which is one reason it is so widely used.
